Day 1: Out of the Mountains and into Missouri

Day 1: Out of the Mountains and into Missouri

I write this from a Columbia, Mo. Ramada Inn, where I am also currently eating the oldest apple in existence. The joys of the open road!

After rearranging a few boxes, grabbing some chow and returning Chloe's phone to her, which had ended up in my purse, we hit the road at about 10. It was smooth sailing to our first stop, the Castle Gwynn, best known for its appearance in Taylor Swift's Love Story. With Luke one of T Swift's biggest fans and me one of her biggest detractors, a pic from as close as possible was a must.

It turns out that if something is NOT discussed as a good photo opportunity online, you should not assume you're going to be able to get a good photo. Castle Gwynn actually serves as someone's home. I imagine Kim and Kanye bought it just so they can snapchat Taylor and snapchat her "HOW ABOUT THIS LOVE STORY CHYEAH?"

Not even the highest echelons of Tennessee castle owners could deter Luke Howe. He called the delivery number and even googled the address for a private number. No luck.

Back on the road, we realized we would miss our next stop, the Laumeier Sculpture Park, but would pass through Downtown St. Louis. I had never seen the arch, so we took a moment to get some photos and gaze up in amazement. It brought to mind the remnants of an oyster shell, polished through its center into a thin outer band, this time hammered and pummeled by man, not sea.

Nixe has been an angel, other than a bit of pointed mewing and glares from her spot at the foot of the passenger side.

Time to roll on to Cheyenne, Wy. We're excited to finally reach the West today and may hit up a cowboy bar or two if we get in soon enough. See more photos below!
